Counting of votes for the high-stakes Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala (Keralam), Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry has begun. The counting began at 8 am, with postal ballots being counted first. In West Bengal, counting is being held on 293 of the total 294 seats after the Election Commission of India scrapped the Falta polls over “severe electoral offences” and announced fresh voting on May 21.

West Bengal went to the polls in two phases on April 23 and 29, recording a historic voter turnout of 92.47 per cent. Elections in Assam were held in a single phase on April 9 with 85.38 per cent voter turnout. Assam voted in a single phase on April 9 and delivered an impressive 85.38% voter turnout, comfortably beating the 82.04% seen in 2021.

Polling in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu was held on April 23 in a single phase. The state recorded a massive 85.10 per cent turnout, the highest since Independence.

The Union Territory of Puducherry voted on April 9 in a single phase. According to the Election Commission of India, Puducherry also registered a record 89.87 per cent voter turnout. Assembly elections in Kerala (Keralam) were held on April 23 in a single phase. The Left-ruled state also saw an impressive turnout of 79.63 per cent.

The counting of votes is also underway for the seven Assembly bypolls in five states.
